According to the legend the guard of the „big barrel“ in the castle of Heidelberg was the dwarf Perkeo from South Tirol (Italy).
As court-jester he became a symbolic figure of the Heidelberg carnival.
The name Perkeo was given to him because of his reputation to consume a great amount of wine.
He was known to drink 18 bottels of wine daily. He got the offer from the prince elector to get the castle and the city if he would drink the whole barrel in one, and he answered with the words „perche no!“ (ital. „why not“), so his name was born. According to the legend Perkeo died when he drank a glass off water instead of wine.
